Three of the most prominent characteristics of the U.S. today are political polarization, systemic racism, and the powerful influence of social media to shape our thinking. After the 2016 presidential election, researchers at MIT and several other institutions began reporting on how many millions of people live in bubbles on social media.
For followers of Jesus, it’s particularly vital that we don’t lock ourselves into cultural and racial bubbles online, since the unity with diversity of the Body of Christ is the hallmark of our witness to God’s wisdom and the truth of the Gospel.
The recent “Hug Heard ‘Round the World’ is a great illustration of how living in an online racial bubble can severely constrain a White Christian’s ability to understand the perspectives of Black, Brown, and Indigenous Christians. Many White Christians couldn’t understand why The Hug wasn’t an unqualified victory for the Kingdom since they were not listening to the perspectives of non-White Christians online.
That’s why I’ve compiled this list of Bubble-Bursting goodness. Enjoy!
